

Goetta Recipe

Goetta is a German-inspired breakfast sausage, made from ground meat, oats, and spices. Created in the late 1800s as a way to make meat last longer and save money. It is a staple in Cincinnati, and the surrounding tri-state, due to the influence of the areas large German population. It isn’t just a delicious source of protein, but heart healthy, high in fiber and Vitamin B, and is also low in calories and trans fat.
Ingredients
1 pound ground beef
1 pound ground pork or pork sausage
8 cups water
2 1/2 cups pinhead oats or steel cut oats
1 large onion, chopped
2 bay leaf
3 teaspoons salt
1 pinch pepper
Directions
In a large pot bring water to a boil and add oats, salt and pepper-reduce to a simmer, cover and cook for 2 hours.
Add meat, onion, spices and cover, cooking for 1 hour more.
Pour into one or two loaf pan.
Cool and then refrigerate.
Turn out, slice and fry until brown in a bit of butter or oil.
